User-Generated Content Big Focus for New Tech
Products: Report By Krystle Chow, Ottawa Business Journal Staff Mon, Jan 15, 2007 11:00 AM EST
The technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) industry will be focusing more on tailoring product offerings to allow consumers to be more involved with their technology this year, according to a new Deloitte study. The report showed analysts were expecting a big push toward user-driven technology among the top 10 trends in the sector. "The entire TMT industry is focusing more on giving people the power to enjoy and consume what they want, when they want, and how they want it," said Deloitte spokesperson John Ruffolo. "New trends are expected to create new product categories, new markets, and in some cases even change the structure of existing industries." Some of the trends identified in the study include a stronger focus on making user-generated content in the media more useful, especially for promotional purposes and as a way of finding new talent; profiting from viewer participation in television as more people own mobile phones and technology improves to handle thousands of simultaneous calls and text messages; and working harder to make tech products environmentally friendly as green concerns increase. The report also looked at the rise of the business of virtual fantasy worlds, the biometric security industry, and the weakness in the mobile television and land-line sectors. Deloitte's Technology, Media and Telecommunications Predictions survey looked at the input of more than 5,000 Deloitte TMT practitioners and clients, as well as industry and financial analysts from around the world. It also polled 36 global executives on the key industry theme of convergence. |
