DragonWave Inc. has won a contract to provide 270 wireless backhaul links for a new wireless network across Pakistan.

The Ottawa-based wireless networking equipment maker said Orascom Telecom Holding S.A.E. has selected DragonWave's Horizon Compact high-capacity Internet protocol (IP) backhaul product for a nationwide WiMAX network with Orascom's Pakistani mobile operator Mobilink.

Mobilink is using DragonWave's technology to pilot its 3.5-gigahertz WiMAX infrastructure in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore, with proposals to cover five major metros, including in-building coverage for high-value business areas. The new network will provide data and other IP-based applications to enterprise, government and residential customers across the various municipalities.

"Mobilink selected DragonWave because our carrier-grade, native Ethernet capabilities will help them to continue building state-of-the-art networks," said DragonWave CEO Peter Allen in a statement. "We look forward to working with Mobilink and the Orascom Telecom group to deliver best-in-class WiMAX networks across their group of national operators."

Orascom Telecom is one of the largest GSM carriers operating in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia with more than 60 million customers.
