Ottawa-based security IP product supplier Elliptic Semiconductor has extended its contract with California-based Beceem Communications to design secure WiMAX systems.

Elliptic has been working with Beceem, a chipset supplier for the mobile WiMAX terminal market, since 2004. The two companies work with operators and service providers to develop a security architecture for mobile WiMAX networks that helps protect users from "eavesdropping" by hackers while ensuring that service operators are still providing open networks and rich services to customers.

"The two companies are please to announce this collaboration aimed at implementing a practical and robust system security architecture that will enable carriers to roll-out a rich service offering in mobile WiMAX," said Elliptic chief executive Richard White in a statement.
