Spotwave names industry veteran new CEO
By Ottawa Business Journal Staff Wed, Sep 15, 2004 9:00 AM EST Only a few weeks after announcing a financing round that should bring the company to profitability, Spotwave Wireless named a veteran executive its new CEO on Wednesday to help take it to the next level. Taking over from co-founder Shane Young on Oct. 4 will be Bill Carlin, formerly senior VP and COO of Mountain View, Calif.-based interWAVE Communications. Mr. Young will step aside and retain the title of president, as well as his seat on the board of directors. The announcement follows last month's venture capital round, in which Spotwave received $7 million in fresh venture capital, along with a $5-million credit facility from Royal Bank of Canada. Mr. Carlin's job will be to parlay the efforts of the existing management team into new business throughout North America and abroad. He will also take a seat on the board. Mr. Young and Mr. Carlin will work together in the areas of product planning, development and management and guide the growth of Spotwave's operations. Spotwave's flagship product is the SpotCell repeater, an out-of-the-box product meant to boost wireless phone and Internet signals in buildings with heavy glass, steel and concrete infrastructure that reduces reception. In June, Spotwave announced a deal with Telus Corp. in which the B.C.-based phone giant will offer Spotwave's products to business customers of the Mike cellular network operated by Telus Mobility. Spotwave announced a similar deal last September with U.S. Cellular, a key player in the U.S. wireless market with four million customers in 25 states. "Spotwave is a great company with an even greater future and I'm pleased to join the team to continue to build on this momentum," Mr. Carlin said in statement. When the venture capital round was announced last month, Jim Blattman, RBC's group manager of technology banking, commented on the strength of Spotwave's management team and their accomplishments to date. Company spokeswoman Connie Costigan emphasized Wednesday that the VC round was not contingent upon the hiring of Mr. Carlin. The investors in the round committed the cash based on the accomplishments of the existing management team. Though InterWAVE's head office is in California, Mr. Carlin lives Maryland. Ms Costigan said the new CEO has no plans to relocate his family to Ottawa, but the requirements of his new job will demand that he spend much of his time on the road in pursuit of new customers. Before joining interWAVE, Mr. Carlin was founder and managing director of Terrapin Broadband Inc., a privately held company that specialized in sales, business development and systems integration services for the wireless market. "Bill has a strong track record of delivering profitable revenue growth in a number of similarly-positioned, high-growth communications businesses," Spotwave chairwoman Kerri Golden added. "His experience and worldwide network of customer and partner relationships are ideal to help lead Spotwave through the next phase of international expansion and growth." Mr. Carlin's first job was at Scientific Atlanta, where he became an international sales manager responsible for driving sales of digital satellite and broadband communications equipment in Europe, the Middle-East and Africa. He has also held several executive positions with Hughes Network Systems International. "Bill's extensive experience in selling wireless and other emerging communications products and technologies in a number of markets around the world make him an excellent addition to our team," added Mr. Young. "I look forward to working with Bill to help build Spotwave into a thriving global entity." |
