UPDATE: PointShot secures
California partner Ottawa's PointShot Wireless has teamed up with a California construction management firm to provide its mobile wireless Internet services to the U.S. rail industry. PointShot has partnered with Parsons Corp., a company with annual revenues in the last fiscal year of more than US$1.6 billion. Parsons's construction management services extend into the realm of IT and telecommunications systems for the transportation sector, such as airports and trains. The company supplies communications gear to customers in just about every segment of the U.S. rail industry, from commuter, light rail and inter-city service to high-speed passenger trains. It is that focus that fits with PointShot and its wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) technology for bringing Internet services to mobile environments such as train cars. Parsons will market to its customers PointShot's RailPoint technology as the product of choice for in-transit Wi-Fi Internet service. Financial terms of the deal were not released. The announcement comes after PointShot established its reputation in California last year with a pilot project on the commuter rail service operated by Altamont Commuter Express in the Silicon Valley area. "PointShot's tested product platform and onboard services expertise and Parsons' wealth of experience in rail infrastructure creates a union that will deliver essential capabilities missing in the mobile Wi-Fi space," Keith Dunbar, program director at Parsons, said in a statement. "The core competencies of this team are unmatched in the industry," added PointShot chief executive Shawn Griffin. "Parsons and PointShot are bringing a best-of-breed Wi-Fi solution to market, ensuring that end-users have affordable and secure Wi-Fi access and that operators have seamless provisioning and management of these services." |
