Local microchip company Elliptic Semiconductor Inc. made a move into the Asia-Pacific market Monday as it landed a distributor deal in Taiwan.

Elliptic landed a deal with SinoStar Technologies Inc. Monday that clears the way for Elliptic's product to be sold in Taiwan. SinoStar develops technology that allows chipmakers to embed their products on larger communications systems. The company also produces other integration tools like debugging technology. The company has similar distribution deals in Taiwan with MediaStream Inc. and Equator Technologies Inc.

In a release, Elliptic's chief executive officer Gord Harling said the move allows Elliptic to penetrate a market that is ripe with wireless products and ideas.

"Taiwan has become a hotbed of design and manufacture or wireless products," Harling said. "As such, the Taiwanese market is perfect for Elliptic and we're pleased to work with the team at SinoStar."

Founded last summer, Elliptic Semiconductor is developing a system-on-a-chip product geared toward reducing the power consumption of a wireless device. The company is also developing a security chip for virtual private networks.

The firm landed an $800,000 seed round last November from Axis Partners and Venture Coaches. The company is now working on its first round of financing.
