The Fund was established to generate significant capital appreciation primarily through investments in equity and equity related securities of early stage technology companies, with a particular emphasis on early stage and mid stage companies in the Cleantech market sector. Within this sector, the Fund focuses on companies engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, marketing, sale and support of energy efficient materials; components, sub-systems, systems, and solutions for energy management; and innovative technologies improving fundamental processes with respect to energy and waste stream reductions.

Investment Objectives and Strategy

The primary investment objective for the Fund is to invest in a diversified portfolio of companies within the Cleantech sector. The investment selection will require strong business fundamentals with a global market focus that can return to the Limited Partners both invested capital and above average gains in a reasonable timeframe.

To accomplish this goal, the Fund will target investments in companies in a range of stages, capitalizing on the opportunities in Canada resulting from the historical shortage of funding in both the Cleantech sector, and in Canada in general. Once the Fund has invested in a company, the Fund will generally maintain its ownership position through investments in successive rounds of financing. Investments in individual companies will normally be in the range of $250,000 to $5,000,000, for companies raising between $250,000 and $50,000,000 during the round. Because of its track record and depth of its team, it is anticipated that the majority of Venture Coaches investments will be in Canada.

The General Partner will endeavour to invest or commit to invest all of the Committed Capital within five years of the initial closing of the Fund.

The Cleantech sector includes energy (generation, infrastructure, storage and efficiency), materials, recycling and waste processing, transportation, water and waste-water, air quality etc. Venture Coaches has built an extended team that has the depth and breadth to ensure that Venture Coaches makes its investment decisions based on the best knowledge available, while also giving its investee companies superb support to maximize their opportunities and performance. Venture Coaches has focused on a building a team that balances sector knowledge with venture/financial knowledge/experience and perhaps most importantly, operational and executive management experience.
